Turning the living room into your very own cinema, snuggling up with a bowl of popcorn, and nestling down to watch a family film together is one of the exquisite joys of modern parenting. It’s a way to have quality time together away from the humdrum of daily life, whilst winding down and sharing something together. At Sitters we’ve been on the children’s favourite film circuit a while and here are the ones that we rate the Best 15 Animated Movies that both you and your children will enjoy, whatever their age or gender.

1. Kung Fu Panda – PG – Dreamworks

You can’t help but fall in love with the wonderful Po who’d rather have a date with some dim sum than become a Kung Fu warrior. Kids love this all out action movie, parents will love the landscapes and humour.

2. The Lego Movie – U - Warner Studios

As a parent you’ve probably found yourself relating to President Business’s love of the superglue, but this is a heart-warming adventure in to the reasons why to steer clear. The animation is awesome – just like the song.

4. How to Train Your Dragon – PG – Dreamworks

The Island of Berk is home to some blood-thirsty Vikings, where son of the chief, Hiccup, doesn’t quite fit in. However, Hiccup becomes an unlikely Viking hero as he brings the feared dragons on side. Inspiring, intriguing, and most definitely filled with some sarcastic humour for the grown-ups.

5. Toy Story 1, 2, and 3 – PG – Disney Pixar

Cheekily squeezing in 3 movies in 1, the Toy Story trilogy is a daring tale of adventure that has gradually raised the bar for the best animated movies around the world. Children can relate to the toys they know and love, whilst deep themes surrounding growing up pull at the parental heart-strings.

6. The Lion King – U – Disney

The score and musical numbers of The Lion King are what elevate this film from just another cartoon to something exquisite. The whole family will be singing along whilst planning how to book a safari.

7. Mr Peabody and Sherman – U – Dreamworks

If you haven’t yet seen this film, make it a family priority. There are multi-levels of humour which will leave both the youngest and the oldest viewers grabbing their sides. What’s more, it really is the most engaging history lesson ever.

8. Shrek – U – Dreamworks

Dreamworks departs from the sugar-coated fairytales of Disney and puts a different, and slightly darker, spin on them. Nonetheless, the antics of Shrek and Donkey are enough to delight your smallest viewers, whilst the popular songs accompanying the film will tick the adult’s boxes.

9. Monsters Inc – U – Disney Pixar

Whilst kids will be amused at Mike and Sully, Mums and Dads will hark after their own little one’s toddler days with the animated darling Boo. Looking at the world of ‘monsters in the cupboard’ from a totally different perspective will be sure to banish the baddies from nightmares and lure your little ones in to happy monster dreams instead.

10. Brave – PG – Disney

It might be a Disney Princess Movie but we assure you this one is for everyone. There’s nothing stereotypically princess here, in fact it’s a tale of feminism, love, family pride and the depth of legend. Do shield little eyes when Mordu first appears, but otherwise this is an inspiring energetic Scottish tale, and frankly the music will be an ear worm you welcome.

Brave

11. Inside Out – U – Disney Pixar

Disney Pixar came up trumps with this clever animation about the complexities of emotion. Amusing and heart-warming in equal measure, this movie helps to give voice to those feelings that ‘get too big’ in a fun and inspiring way. Mums, Dads, and Kids will all relate.

12. Despicable Me – U – Universal

What can we say, there’s nothing to beat the Minions when it comes to pure comedy value. Put this alongside a tale of adoption for three brilliant girls and global villainy and you have a movie that has to be seen to be believed. Sure to become a firm family favourite.

 Despicable Me

13. Shaun the Sheep Movie – U – Aardman Animations

Parents who love Wallace and Grommet will be just as happy as littlies who love Timmy Time with the Shaun the Sheep Movie. This is the hilarious story of the mischievous yet clever sheep of Mossy Bottom Farm, and a brilliant introduction to the skill and unique quality of Aardman productions.

 Shaun

14. Song of the Sea – U – Studiocanal

This is such an adorable and enchanting Irish tale of big brother Ben and his little sister Saoirse, the last Seal Child. This is an animated adventure of legends and magic that will work its way in to the hearts of everyone watching.

Sing A Song

15. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs – U – Sony Pictures

If you’re looking for laugh a minute absurdity then the crazy antics of the mad inventor Flint and his talking monkey assistant, teaming together with the helpful weather girl, in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, is the film for you. Brilliant as a wind down after a long week and guaranteed to make everyone chuckle.
